Max Patch – Western North Carolina

Max Patch, the crown jewel of the 2,174 mile Appalachian Trail is located just down the road from Avalon. Here the Appalachian Trail crosses over Max Patch bald where you can see Mount Mitchell to the east, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi, Great Smoky Mountain National Park to the south and the ridges of Tennessee to the west. In the summer, the bald is full of wildflowers and birds which makes for a great place to picnic and relax. Be sure to trek up to Max Patch in the fall to catch all the vibrant colors and enjoy the 360’ degree panoramic views. Try to catch a full moon rising, it’s breathtaking.
